A break

Reflecting on taking a mini writing break this year

A break:

A break.

I took a break.

Needed it.

Stopped writing for a while.

Kept the journal writing.

But not the blogs.

Hadn’t felt like I needed to.

Instead, focused on figuring out other parts of my life in the last few months.

Remember, it’s relative for me.

Have I still written a bit the last few months?

Absolutely.

More than the average person.

But I’ve dropped off from what I normally do.

Significantly.

Same with reading.

Not as up to speed this year.

But that’s ok.

I channeled my energy elsewhere.

Did a lot of things.

Published a new post every day on Substack.

That was my number 1 goal.

On track to complete it.

Got my first deal done at work.

Led another one.

Potentially have one more to come.

Been one of the most productive members of my company.

The results speak for themselves.

Traveled 50k miles.

7 different countries.

5 weddings.

Lots of golf.

Sold some books.

Spoke on some podcasts.

Launched a second one.

Published a few hundred episodes on my original one.

Bought a ticket for the Ironman.

Started training for it.

Finished a scuba course.

Doing my first dives by the end of the year.

That’s a busy year.

Did a lot.

Had fun.

Was present.

Lots of parties.

Lots of movies.

Lots of time to reflect.

So it’s ok that I took a break.

It wasn’t a waste.

It wasn’t all for nothing.

Life happens in seasons.

Sometimes in a year.

Sometimes in a decade.

Sometimes across your whole life.

You’re not going to be in summer all the time.

Sometimes it’s gonna be winter.

And other times it’s going to be the transition times.

Savour those.

Enjoy them.

Then come back to what you want.

Once you’ve instituted a habit so much, it can never go away from you.

You’ll have to come back to it.

Happened with me with Bollywood dancing.

Did it as a kid for a decade.

Stopped when I went into uni.

Lost it.

Forgot about it.

Didn’t think I would do it again.

A decade later, picked it back up.

Choreographed 2 dances now, including one earlier this year.

It’ll come back.

The seasons.

That’s what writing is and will be.

Sometimes I’ll be on top of things.

Like when I wrote 500 blog posts in a year.

Feeling that may happen again next year.

But the last little while, I didn’t.

Wasn’t interested.

Didn’t want to force it.

I’m happy I did.

I needed a break.

Time for myself.

Rest.

Now it's time to get back.

Relaxed and ready to go.

Sometimes you just need a break.
