Be on the artist’s side:

Be on the artist’s side.

The side of the artist.

Of the creator.

Of the person who’s trying.

Don’t be on the side of the critic.

The hater.

The one who’s too scared to put their own stuff out there.

Watching Steve Martin’s documentary right now and what a man.

What a journey.

What a person.

Here’s a guy who developed an act for over a decade without any adulation.

A man who couldn’t pay people to come see him.

But he persisted.

He kept trying.

He kept showing up no matter what.

For over a decade.

10+ years.

Think about that commitment.

In the 1980s, he hit his big break.

He became the best-selling comedian, all-time, ever.

Bigger than anyone today.

Then he left that life for something different.

There’s a conversation in the second episode with him and Jerry Seinfeld.

And he says this.

‘Don’t criticize other artists.

Personally I might like something or dislike it but I’m never gonna announce it.

Because we have critics who want to kill us.

I’m on the artistic side of it.’

Beautifully said.

It’s easier to criticize and harder to create.

For anyone out there who’s trying to create, keep going.

You’re doing great.

For those of you on the sideline criticizing, acknowledge at least someone is trying.

Even if you don’t like it.

That’s more than you’ll ever do sitting on the sideline.

Be on the artist’s side.
