Favourite Free Resources

When I was a university student, I did not want to pay for anything I didn’t have to. I spent years looking through tons of websites to find access to content for free, so I thought it’s worth sharing with people.

Whether you’re trying to stream a playoff game, download a book your friend told you about, or watch a show that premiered in 2005, here’s a list of my favourite free websites and extensions.

Personally, I’d bookmark this for later because this may come in handy in the future.

Sci-hub: can get access to all of the scientific papers for free. Usually scientific articles are behind paywalls and you can’t get access to them, especially after you’ve left university. Super useful if you’re in a research role. (If the link dies, search Sci-Hub on google)

Goodreads: One of my favourite apps. Great way to keep track of all the books you’ve read, or want to read.

E-books: can download almost any book for free. Usually it’s a PDF version or -epub which works on tablets. Trust me, it’s a lifesaver if you’re a big reader and can’t carry books around. (If the link dies, search Z Library on google)

Streaming sites for all TV shows/movies: Can watch any movie or TV show in HD all for free. Old seasons of the Sopranos or those Entourage episodes you’ve been meaning to watch forever? Try this, this, or this.

Sports streaming sites: when I was studying in the UK, didn’t have access to cable but that didn’t stop me from watching games. NBA here, NFL here, Soccer here.

Side note: if you ever want to watch a specific sport, type in ‘whatever sport — Reddit streams.’ If you do enough digging, you’ll usually find a great site.

Adblocker: most people probably already have this but just in case you don’t, download it. Protects you from seeing tons of ads anytime you search

Pocket: ever scrolled a story and wish you could save it for later? Download Pocket. Super useful way to flag any video, article or newspaper piece you want to read later, whether on your phone or desktop.

Grammarly: saves you if you’re like me and sometimes have no idea how sentences are supposed to sound. Reads all of the info you type on a browser and corrects it to the right spelling/grammar.

Hunter.IO: this one is great if you’re looking for people’s emails. Free chrome extension where once you go to a landing page, it’ll tell you the email addresses of people who work there. Doesn’t work all the time but it’ll give you the skeleton of what their email could be (ex: first@example.com).
