90% of everything you do will be crap:

90% of everything you do will be crap.

That’s Sturgeon’s law coined by American science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon.

He was commenting on how critics used to think science fiction was crap and infered that the majority of works in other fields also suck.

Learned this for the first time in a book I read called ‘How to Live a Good life’ by Rolf Dobelli.

It changed my perspective.

Most of what you do in your life, whether it’s work, personal or family related, is useless.

However, 10% of it is what determines if you live a good life or not.

Most of what you do will suck.

That’s ok.

Don’t take yourself and everything you do so seriously because again, most of what you do will suck.

It’s something I need to remind myself as I continue to write that most of this work will be terrible.

As of today I have ~720 blog posts. That means 72 have been decent while the remaining have been shit.

Cool.

If I can create thousands of them over the course of my life, it means hundreds might be good.

That would be pretty amazing considering all you need in life is one opportunity to hit.

Sturgeon’s law reminds me that failing more frequently actually leads to more success.

If you only take 10 chances, you have to hope that 1 hit really well.

If you take 100, there’s a good chance 1 of the 100 will hit.

So fail more often.

Take more chances because as per Mr. Sturgeon, 90% of what you do will suck anyway.

But if you increase your frequency of failure, your amount of success increases as well.
