Forgive yourself:

Forgive yourself.

What happened to you is not your fault.

You have no control over other people’s actions.

You can’t decide how they’ll act or what they’ll say.

They may hurt you but that’s not your fault.

It’s not your burden to keep.

We suffer more in thinking about the past than understanding there’s nothing you can do about it.

It’s gone.

You can’t control what happened at that moment.

You can only control how you react today.

You can control your response.

But that takes time.

It takes a lot of self-work.

It can be through therapy, writing or meditating but you have to do the self-work.

You need to understand your past.

How can you know where to go if you don’t know where you’ve come from and why you are the way you are.

It took me many years to accept I couldn’t control my parent’s actions.

I couldn’t protect my siblings from what they were seeing.

As the eldest, I internalized a lot of conflict in our household.

I used to believe it was my fault.

All kids tend to when their parents fight, but that stuff sticks with you.

The guilt and shame are hard to shake.

It can eat at you if you let it.

But you have a choice.

You can forgive yourself.

It’s not your fault.

Other people’s words and actions are not your responsibility.

Your responsibility is to yourself.

So before forgiving anyone else, forgive yourself.

Keep going, you’re doing great.
