The Wild Robot:

The Wild Robot.

A story about a missing robot.

Someone lost.

Who has no purpose.

And is looking to find one.

By chance, she’s blessed with an opportunity.

A privilege.

To become a parent.

Only she has no idea what she’s doing.

Like all parents feel.

We’re all making it up.

Even those who we look up to like our parents.

Thinking they have it all figured it out.

When they have no idea what they’re doing.

But this was more than just a movie about parenting.

It was about resilience.

About failure.

About leading with kindness.

About showing up for people.

About community.

It was more than just a movie about a robot.

One of the ideas that stuck with me was about programming.

Roz was programmed a certain way.

Believed the world to be a certain way.

Was given a blueprint by her masters on how the world works.

We are the same.

Our subconscious, environment and role models as kids programmed us.

But just because you have one set of programming doesn’t mean you can’t learn another.

Doesn’t mean you can’t work on yourself.

Doesn’t mean you can’t change your program.

Took Roz forever to learn that.

To learn that you can rewrite your program.

Also, you can have all the knowledge in the world.

But nothing will prepare you for taking care of a kid.

They’ll grow up to follow you.

Copy you.

Be like you.

Sometimes to their detriment.

But other times to their success.

Invest in your children.

Invest in the next generation.

Get teachers to show them how it’s done.

Then watch them fail.

Watch them struggle.

Support them even when they don’t believe they can do it.

We all need cheerleaders.

Even when Bright Bill said he could never fly, Roz and Fink didn’t let him believe it.

They stuck with him.

Showed them the way.

Then they had to let him go.

Like all parents do.

You have your kids till 18.

After that, you have to let them soar.

Even if that means falling on their face a few times.

You need them to be independent because they can’t be children forever.

The process is the point.

Because you never know when your work will come in handy.

The beaver was working on cutting down that tree for his whole life.

Being made fun of by everyone.

When meanwhile he unlocked the secret to creativity.

Love the work, not the result.

Because one day, all your hard work will be praised.

You’ll be made to look like a genius while you spent years being made fun of as a fool.

Find your community, especially when times are hard.

Always be yourself no matter how much of a runt you are.

All you need is a few people to believe in you and you can accomplish anything you want.

Learned all this from a robot.

Go watch the Wild Robot.
