Why do you work so hard?

Why do you work so hard?

Why?

What’s the point?

To make money?

To buy stuff?

To live in a bigger house?

To go on a lot of vacations?

Why?

Ask yourself.

Most people run on a treadmill their whole lives.

Never asking themself this basic question.

Why?

Why do you work so hard?

What’s the point?

A lot of people get by without working so hard.

This post is not for them.

This is for you.

The person who’s always working.

Who’s always grinding.

Who’s always thinking about the next win.

Why?

Why do you work so hard?

For me, it was money and status for a long time.

Become a doctor to make my parents happy.

Make a lot of money to show them and the world I could do it.

Never stop working till you made more money than you could imagine.

But what’s the point if you lose yourself along the way?

What’s the point if you lose close relationships along the way?

I’ve been in Tokyo the last few days.

Staying at one of the nicest hotels in the city.

According to the front desk, Lebron James stayed here recently.

It’s nice.

Like really nice.

Very Ex Machina vibes.

That kind of place.

We were out all day in Tokyo yesterday.

Went to Team Labs.

Incredible.

Then go carted around all of Tokyo dressed in a Minion onesie.

It was a core memory.

Something I’ll never forget.

We ended up back at the hotel and before I went to bed, I went to the pool by myself.

Really nice pool.

Reminds me of one of those pools you see in movies at billionaire’s houses.

Like too nice.

It was just me, swimming back and forth a few times before relaxing in the jacuzzi.

I kept thinking.

This is it.

This is what my parent’s hard work has given me.

But it didn’t feel that great.

I was alone.

It was just me.

There was no one to share that experience with.

I’ve read and listened to many successful old people talk about this.

Most billionaires are miserable.

Always chasing money and losing relationships in the process.

What’s the point of making so much money if you can’t spend it with anyone?

My therapist made me realize this.

She asked me this question at the end of last year.

‘Describe your happiest moments in 2023.’

Two came to mind.

One was dancing with my siblings and parents at a pre-wedding party in New Delhi under the stars with our family friends.

The other was singing a decade-old song with a university friend who went through a really difficult time and thought about committing suicide.

Described both of those moments and she said ‘what do those have in common?’

‘I don’t know.’ I responded.

‘They were both with other people.

They weren’t alone.

No matter how much you achieve, and you will achieve a lot because it’s hard-wired into you, you’ll never be happier than when you’re doing stuff with others.’

That was a big realization for me.

Why work so hard and make so much money if you can’t have experiences with the people you love.

That’s the point.

Enjoy your time here with the people you love and who love you.

That’s why I work so hard.

Why do you?
