The aimless need to accumulate stuff

You’ll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse:

You’ll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse.

When your body is being put into that van on the way to the cemetery or the funeral home, your stuff isn’t following you.

All these things you want to accumulate - a house, car, watches, jewelry, bags, stuff, - it ain’t coming with you to your grave.

The Ancient Egyptians tried that.

Put all the gold in their leaders tombs thinking it would go with them into the afterlife.

But it’s still there.

Sitting there accumulating dust.

This goal of accumulating stuff shouldn’t be what drives you.

It should be your purpose.

Whether that’s your work, your family, your friends or doing something bigger than yourself, commit to something you want to do.

Something you enjoy, you’re willing to work hard at, you’re willing to fail at and you’re willing to do for decades.

While pursuing that, never forget about the people around you.

Bring them along for the ride.

You know what you do take to your grave?

Stories.

Memories.

Experiences.

Those will live in the minds of everyone who’s still alive.

These are way more important than any car, watch, ring or house.

So don’t accumulate stuff, accumulate stories.

We’re all going to be in that van one day and I’d much rather have a lifetime of stories than a lifetime of stuff.

Remember, you’ll never see a U-haul behind a hearse.
