The pace of creation is what matters:

The pace of creation is what matters.

Quality is subjective, quantity is not.

What you think is good, someone else thinks is bad.

What you think is bad, someone else thinks it’s good.

If you produce a number of efforts in whatever creative domain you choose, eventually some will be good.

Some people will like what you’ve made.

Many people who won’t like it, but that doesn’t matter.

You cannot control anyone’s opinion of your work.

As a creative, build for yourself.

Make something you enjoy.

Rick Rubin, one of the greatest American music producers of the last 40 years, was on the Lex Fridman podcast recently and that was his advice to young people.

Create for yourself.

He’s worked with every major artist.

Yet every day he’s open to creating new things.

Continuing to work at his craft not sure which ones will stick and which ones won’t.

Artists talk about this a lot.

Pieces they make that they think are good, sometimes the audience doesn’t like.

But pieces they brushed aside maybe their greatest hits.

How can you decide how other people are going to interpret your work?

You can’t.

So create.

Keep creating no matter the odds.

No matter the self-judgment.

No matter how difficult it may be.

You do not know what will connect with someone.

You do not know when a line or a specific beat could change someone’s life.

Everything you make is a reflection of a moment in time.

Do not judge yourself, put your best into that piece of work and let it go.

Rick Rubin is an all-time great in his domain and he knows.

The pace of creation is what matters.
